Just a few days left for Credit Policy review and Union Budget 2012-13, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday, cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 75 basis points to 4.75 per cent effective March 10. The CRR stood at 5.5 per cent earlier.

The CRR cut will inject Rs 48,000 crore of liquidity into the banking system. CRR cut will ensure smooth flow of credit. CRR has been cut to inject permanent primary liquidity into the system.

The Reserve Bank defended its tight money policy of the past two years, saying hiking interest rates was to strike a balance between growth and inflation, a day after government said economic growth in the third quarter had slumped to over 2-year low of 6.1 per cent. The inflation had fallen to an over two-year low of 6.55 per cent in January on cheaper food items.
