2. Philip Abraham, an Indian journalist from Kerala , has been elected as a councillor in the UK, becoming the first person of Asian origin to be elected to the Loughton town council. 

3. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, elected as Chairman of the ADB’s (Asian Development Bank) Board of Governors and the country will host the 46th annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank in New Delhi next year. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide assistance of USD 6.25 billion to India over three years for various projects, including those in the energy and education sectors.

4. A Paris court sentenced a Franco-Algerian nuclear physicist Mr. Adlene Hicheur, to four years in jail, after he was convicted of plotting with al Qaeda’s north African branch to carry out terror attacks.

5. TIDCO (Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation) is planning to establish an Integrated Aerospace Park in Chennai with the objective of supporting the development of aerospace industry covering design, engineering, manufacturing, servicing and maintenance of aircraft in Tamil Nadu.

6. The U.S. Transportation Department has slapped a USD 80,000 fine on Air India for failing to post customer service and tarmac delay contingency plans on its website and adequately inform passengers about its optional fees.

•Industrial output grows by 8.6% ; manufacturing sector registers 9.1%.
•Exports in April-December 2010 up by 29.5 %.
•Imports in April – December 2010 up by 19%.
•Growth broad based with rebound in Agriculture, continued momentum in manufacturing and private services.
•Fundamentals strong with Savings & Investments up, exports rising rapidly and inflation falling.
•59% rise in Net Bank Credit.
•Social programme spending stepped up by 5 percentage points of GDP over past 5 years.
•Gross Fiscal Deficit stands at 4.8% of GDP down from 6.3% last year.

The minister in his budget speech, projected the economic growth for 2012-13 to be 7.6%.  The total tax receipts for fiscal year 2012-13 is estimated to be 1077612 crore rupees, the total budget expenditure is projected to be 1490925 crore rupees. Budgetary allocations for various sectors including education, health, agriculture, defense, has received a reasonable increase.

Highlights of Budget Estimates 2012-13:

•    Gross Tax Receipts estimated at 1077612 crore rupees.
•    Net Tax to Centre estimated at 771071 crore rupees.
•    Non-tax Revenue Receipts estimated at 164614 crore rupees.
•    Non-debt Capital Receipts estimated at 41650 crore rupees.
•    Total expenditure for 2012-13 budgeted at 1490925 crore rupees.
•    Plan expenditure for 2012-13 at 521025 crore rupees is 18 per cent higher than Budget Estimate of 2011-12.
•    Non-plan expenditure estimated at 969900 crore rupees.
•    365216 crore rupees estimated to be transferred to States.
•    Fiscal deficit at 5.1 per cent of GDP in Budget Estimate 2012-13.
•    Net market borrowing required to finance the deficit to be 4.79 lakh crore rupees in 2012-13.
•   Central Government debt at 45.5 per cent of GDP in 2012-13 as compared to Thirteenth Finance Commission target of 50.5 per cent.
•    Effective Revenue Deficit to be 1.8 per cent of GDP in 2012-13.
