1. Census 2011 covered 35 States/Union Territories, 640 districts, 5,924 sub-districts, 7,935 Towns and 6,40,867 Villages.
2. The growth rate of population for India in the last decade was 17.64%. The growth rate of population in rural and urban areas was 12.18% and 31.80% respectively.The population of India has increased by more than 181 million during the decade 2001-2011. Bihar (23.90%) exhibited the highest decadal growth rate in rural population.
3. The population of the country as per the provisional figures of Census 2011 is 1210.19 million of which 623.72 million (51.54%) are males and 586.46 million (48.46%) are females.16.7% of world population in 2.4% of world surface area.

5. Percentage growth in 2001-2011 is 17.64; males 17.19 and females 18.12.
6. Literacy rate has gone up from 64.83 per cent in 2001 to 74.04 per cent in 2011.
7. Overall sex ratio at the national level has increased by 7 points to reach 940 at Census 2011 as against 933 in Census 2001.
8. Kerala with 1084 has the highest sex ratio followed by Puducherry with 1038, Daman & Diu has the lowest sex ratio of 618.
9. Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most populous State in the country followed by Maharashtra with 112 million.
10 Least Populated Territory/State is Lakshdweep (64429).
